The Galápagos Islands
The Galápagos Islands are an archipelago of volcanic islands situated on the Equator west of Ecuador in the Pacific Ocean. The first recorded visit to the islands—named after the giant tortoises that live here—was in 1535. The archipelago is known for having a large number of endemic species that were studied by Charles Darwin. This research led to Darwin’s theory of evolution by means of natural selection.
